Abstract

The article analyzes the sketches and calligraphic notes found in the manuscripts of F. M. Dostoevsky, during the creation of the novel “Crime and Punishment”. It examines Dostoevsky’s original drawings and annotations from his diaries and drafts – sketches, portraits, isolated words and individual letters. The calligraphic notes, made by the author while working on the novel, record new names, concepts and events that are absent in the printed texts and serve as valuable sources of information for the history of his works. In the manuscripts we will notice that the coexistence of illustrations, sketches and calligraphic elements within the manuscripts is not accidental. Every detail reflects Dostoevsky’s distinctive style, not only as a writer, but also as an artist. Graphics inspire broad reflections on his characters, creativity, life and death. All this leads to the conclusion that for F. M. Dostoevsky, graphic sketching served as both a supplementary and, sometimes, as a central tool for the realization of the image. While his specific notes play an important role in understanding the nature of the characters and the broader context of the novel as accurately as possible. For this reason, publishers and translators of Dostoevsky’s texts in the Albanian language should pay attention to his ideographic elements found in the “Crime and Punishment” manuscripts.

Keywords: F. M. Dotojevski “Crime and Punishment”, sketches, calligraphy, function.
