Abstract
Medical language is a specialized discourse used in the field of medicine to convey specific concepts and information. A key characteristic of this discourse is its technical and terminological lexicon, which is often inaccessible to non-experts. In this article, we will analyze Albanian medical terminology, highlighting its main features. The medical lexicon in the Albanian language has been shaped by various linguistic influences overt time. It has been predominantly enriched through borrowings from Italian, due to historical and cultural ties with Italy. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in borrowings from English, driven by globalization and the widespread adoption of international scientific terminology. Another important feature of medical terminology is the use of acronyms and eponyms. Acronyms serve to simplify complex terms for easier clinical use, while eponyms assign the names of individuals who discovered or first described certain diseases or procedures. Furthermore, the presence of synonyms reflects the coexistence of technical-scientific terms and scientific-popular language, leading to varying levels of language usage and accessibility within medical communication.
