Abstract
The Albanian and the Italian languages both belong to the large Indo-European language family. While the Albanian constitutes a separate branch, Italian represents a continuation of the Neo-Latin lineage. These languages have completely distinct linguistic systems, differing in morphological structure, as well as syntactic, phonetic, and lexical aspects. Despite these differences, as members of the same language family, it is understandable that they also share many points of contact and similarities across various linguistic levels. This is due to various economic, geographical, cultural, political factors, etc. In this paper, we aim to analyze – through examples drawn from Italian and Albanian daily newspapers – how the language of the Albanian written press has borrowed elements of syntax and, in particular, lexical items from Italian. These borrowings are reflected in a variety of linguistic registers depending on the communicative intent of the message.
Keywords: borrowings, linguistic calques, lexical aspects, newspaper language, syntactic aspects.
