Abstract
This paper aims to emphasise the irreplaceable and complex role of the teacher in an efficient foreign language teaching and learning process. It is important to note that the content of foreign language textbooks reflects the time in which they were compiled. For this reason, such works must be updated continuously. Our hypothesis is that combining ready-made textbooks with those compiled by the teacher enables content to be updated and teaching/learning strategies to be combined, leading to more active and beneficial language acquisition. This article focuses on the added value of studying pre-90s methods for teaching professional language, through a comparative analysis of historical and contemporary aspects. The qualitative analysis focuses on the content of textbooks aimed at a professional audience. The study employs a qualitative analysis, concentrating on the content of textbooks. The conclusions emphasize the importance of an active approach to curriculum development – combining existing texts with teacher-created content – to foster a teaching/learning process tailored to students’ needs. This approach promotes the use of varied strategies that support independent and effective foreign language acquisition.
