Abstract
Linguistic borrowing is an inevitable phenomenon arising from contact between languages, especially in a globalized world (Haugen, 1950; Weinreich, 1953). It often occurs when new objects, ideas, or practices spread quickly and the souce language provides the corresponding terminology. In the field of sports, English predominates due to its central role in international media and in the development of modern disciplines (Crystal, 2003; Graddol, 2006). Terms such as play-off and fair-play have become established in many languages. These borrowings reflect cultural openness but can also raise concerns about the erosion of linguistic identity. Some scholars advocate for the creation of local equivalents, while others argue that such borrowings enrich the language and reflect its natural evolution.
